APAMEIA ON THE EUPHRATES, MACEDONOUPOLIS AND SELEUCID FORMS OF POLITICAL AND TERRITORIAL CONTROL

Abstract

A través del análisis de dos poleis, Apamea en el Éufrates y Macedonópolis, situadas en la parte occidental de la Migdonia mesopotámica, pretendemos poner de manifiesto las estrategias de control territorial utilizadas tanto por Alejandro Magno como por los seléucidas. Aunque se mantuvo el sistema administrativo de las satrapías aqueménidas, se fundaron nuevas polis con nombres macedónicos o dinásticos, ex nihilo o en emplazamientos preexistentes, que trasladaron la organización jerárquica territorial típica de la polis, la chôra politike, al norte de Mesopotamia. Asimismo, se mantuvieron las zonas del territorio real interpuestas entre las poleis (chôra basilike). Finalmente, en los espacios semidesérticos, poblados por pueblos seminómadas, donde no era posible un control directo, se adoptó una estrategia de negociación continuada. En resumen, Apamea, en el Éufrates, y Macedonópolis son un claro ejemplo de una flexibilidad que jugó un papel clave en el control político, militar, fiscal y económico que el reino seléucida logró ejercer. También ayuda a explicar la consolidación y continuidad de la propia dinastía seléucida
