Abstract

This paper aims to address the debate around the literary source within the discipline of History, as a tool for understanding the hegemonic and counterhegemonic imaginaries and representations. On that basis, it will analyze how, as subordinates, Angolans managed to exercise their agency in the decolonization process through the resignification of literature, and thus resisted the process of colonial subjection. For this purpose, Agostinho Neto's Sacred Hope will be analyzed as a political tool of the dominated during the independence process of Angola and as a form of awareness and identity construction. In this regard, this paper will discuss in the first place the history of Angola and its literature. Furthermore, it will address the literary work Sacred Hope and its relation to the Angolan independence process.
