Abstract

Autonomous weapon systems are a class of weapons that, use artificial intelligence to select targets and decide whether or not to fire. This article examines the State’s responsibility for their use; the weapons must be subjected to human control to be according to law. States and organizations therefore propose two possible standards, the meaningful human control, and the appropriate levels of human control. Their compliance with international humanitarian law is examined through the principles of distinction and proportionality, more precisely whether these weapons are capable of distinguishing between objects and whether their attacks can be proportionate. Finally, different ways of holding States accountable are analysed and proposed
