Resumen

In Vasari's Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, the biography of Filippo Brunelleschi is emphatically placed between those of Masaccio and Donatello. This created a trilogy (consisting of a painter, an architect, and a sculptor) that eventually became crucial to understanding Florentine art from the first half of the fifteenth century. Originally, Brunelleschi's biography stemmed from its connection with Lorenzo Ghiberti's life, emphasizing the competition for the gates of the Baptistery and the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. The collation of the written sources available to Vasari allows a philological reconstruction of the origins of the historiographical scheme underlying his bi-ographies. Also, it provides a new, groundbreaking view of the relationship between Vasari's Lives and the so-called Anonimo Magliabechiano.
